Here are 3 points you need to know before Election Day in Canada.

On October 21, 2019, as a Canadian worker, you will have a right to the following:

• You will have 3 paid consecutive hours during your work day (if you work, of course) that will be allocated to go vote. You must notify your employer of when you are taking this time period.
  It can be take at the beginning, in the middle or at the end of the day. However, you must be aware that if your polling station is open before or after your work for 3 consecutive hours, you may not take 3 hours in addition. For example, if your polling station opens at 8 a.m. and you start work at 10 a.m., you will have 2 consecutive hours before work, so the employer will have to grant you one more. You may therefore arrive at work at 11 a.m. This example also works for the end of a shift.

• You must be careful on social networks and media.
  You will have certain rights for your political opinions on social media.
  The PSAC cites in an article that
  “Union members and all employees have a right to freedom of expression protected by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, even if they work for the federal government. Expressing political opinions or sharing political content on social media is a form of political expression and is protected by the Charter. As a public service worker, you have the right to share content from our campaign on your personal Facebook, Twitter or other social media accounts as long as you do so outside of your hours of work and you don’t use the employer’s equipment.

However, these rights are not absolute, so please consider the following carefully before you post, share, or tweet.

• Go to elections.ca to check if you are registered to vote or to update your address.

How to vote:

• At your polling station on Election Day.
• At the advance polling station on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday of the week before Election Day.
• Once the election is called, at any of the 500 Elections Canada offices, up to six days before Election Day.
• By mail if you live abroad.
