Feds are washing their hands of Wabush – What this means for the community

For several months, we advised the Wabush community about Transport Canada’s decision to eliminate airport firefighting service at Wabush Airport. The communities of Labrador West and Fremont deserve better. The community deserves access to professional aircraft firefighters. Back in March, UCTE wrote a letter to the Minister of Transport, Marc Garneau, advocating for him to stop this risky manoeuvre. Unfortunately, we have not had a reply.

Many in the community are concerned and rightly so. So, what can we do next?

Along with the Labrador West District Labour Council, we are hosting an online townhall to hear from politicians and others in the community about the potential impact of this decision. The event is to take place on June 16th starting at 6:30 p.m. NL Time.

An invitation has been sent to Minister Garneau asking him to participate in the event. Hopefully he will be willing to explain why this decision was taken.
