UCTE Local 00066 members delighted with federal funding announcement

On August 7th, Transport Canada made an announcement following the Port of Johnstown’s application for funding under its National Trade Corridors Fund program. It was a long process, but it was worth it. The port received $4.8 million towards infrastructure modernization. Specifically, the port will replace 9 grain spouts that date back to the 1930s and 1950s. These funds represent approximately 50 % of the replacement cost. The town of Johnstown will provide the remainder of the funding.

The port estimates that these improvements will increase production between 50% and 60% as well as increase elevator storage capacity. This will help make the Port of Johnstown more competitive and will provide more opportunities to respond to growing market demands.

It is important to note that for our members, we have been assured that there will be no layoffs following the modernization of the infrastructure. It is anticipated that construction will begin this fall.
