On July 14, 2021 the federal government announced the creation of a task force to review the Employment Equity Act which has not had a full review since its inception in 1986 or after its application was broadened in 1995 to include the federal public service.
Although this is welcome news, from a labour perspective there are still concerns. The task force is expected to have its work finalized in early 2022. As discussed in PSAC’s article, given the short-time line for this review and the lack of labour representation on the task force, we are concerned that important issues will not be given due consideration.
PSAC is preparing a submission to the Task Force to reflect the current reality faced by marginalized workers that have been, and continue to be, excluded or discriminated against in the workplace. In order to do this, the PSAC is asking members to participate in an online survey. The deadline to complete the survey is September 9, 2021.
