Earlier this afternoon, the Union of Canadian Transportation Employees and St. John’s International Airport reached an understanding that will see the airport remain open while addressing the concerns of the airport firefighters.

The mediated settlement gives protection to the members and tackles some of the safety concerns. Furthermore, the employer agrees to establish a joint committee to address other outstanding issues.

“At the end of the day, we are satisfied that the health of our members was protected,” said Chris Bussey, Atlantic Regional Vice-President. “They have been put through enough and now have assurance that they can go back to work in a safe environment .”
