In Memoriam — Terry Wayne Hoyles

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Brother Terry Wayne Hoyles, an active member of UCTE Local XX. A fire captain at the St. John’s Airport, Brother Wayne Hoyles devoted 48 years to his career in the fire service. His passion for his career saw him volunteer at the Gander municipality in 1973. He worked as a firefighter with Transport Canada at Gander Airport before transferring to St. John’s in 1995 where he served as a Captain with the St. John’s International Airport Authority.

Terry was a recognized figure in the rescue community. He was a member of the rescue team for the crash of Arrow Flight 1285R, a McDonnell Douglas DC-8 airliner which crashed in Gander, Newfoundland on December 12, 1985.

Terry Wayne Hoyles, who died peacefully at home surrounded by his family at the age of 67, was a victim of cancer typically contracted by Canadian firefighters. His exposure to toxic chemicals over the past years brought about this terrible fate. This is why we continue to fight for the health and safety of firefighters around the world.
