In memoriam – Marc Shapiro

Marc Shapiro with daughter

It is with heavy hearts we share the devasting news that Lt. Marc Shapiro with Vancouver Airport (YVR) Fire and Rescue has passed away. After beating cancer 16 years ago, Marc was recently diagnosed with an aggressive stage 4 cancer that was just too much for his body to fight off. Marc was surrounded by his beautiful family on the morning of August 14, 2023 when he passed.

Marc has been with YVR Fire and Rescue for 20 years and was an amazing leader, colleague, and friend. He greeted everyone with a hug and was incredibly welcoming to everyone he encountered. Marc was recently in an Acting Captain role and has been an enormous contributor to the success of the department throughout his career. Marc established the first aid program at YVR and was a head instructor that provided training and certification for many ARFF departments within BC.  Outside of Marc’s passion in the fire service, he generously dedicated his time to raising money for The Distinguished Gentlemen’s Ride to fund Cancer research and was an ambassador for the BC Cancer Foundation.

Marc did not take a single day for granted and his family is what Marc was most proud of.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Pam, his daughter Aurelia, and all of Marc’s family and friends as they go through this difficult time.
