In memoriam: Dave Clark, 1973-2023

With very heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our national president, brother, and friend, Dave Clark, who died suddenly on Thursday, May 18, 2023.
Brother Clark was elected National President of the Union of Canadian Transportation Employees at its 2017 Convention. Dave served in several union positions in different unions throughout his working life, such as shop steward and local president. In 2011, he became the UCTE Regional Vice-President Pacific Region, a position he held until 2017. He was also the first National President elected from the private sector, of which he was very proud.
Having worked for Transport Canada, various airlines, and finally, the Vancouver International Airport Authority, Dave understood many of the issues faced by our members, whether they found themselves in trades, safety and security, or administration.
What was important to Dave was that the union stay connected with its membership. “Working with the members at the ground level, I realized there were changes that needed to happen within the labour movement to remain current and relevant.” As a result, Brother Clark brought about different ways for UCTE to engage with its members who were not usually involved.
His family was the only thing more important to him than the labour movement. Our thoughts and prayers are with Dave’s wife, children, parents, and siblings that he loved dearly.
Rest in solidarity, Brother Clark.
Dave Clark passed away suddenly on May 18th, 2023, leaving behind a wife and five children. He was an amazing union activist, a proud father and a loving husband to his wife Evelyn, a friend, and a mentor to many.
Due to his sudden passing and the responsibility to his children, we are asking for any donations to assist in supporting his family until the settlement of his estate. We hope the financial assistance will also allow his wife to come to Canada to say goodbye to her husband and establish an education fund for his four young daughters.
His family was his number one priority. Olivia, 29; Caleen, 10; Brigitte, 5; Shenseea, 4, and Tianna, 2. Any donations would be greatly appreciated.
Donations can be sent to cg33@telus.net or cheques made out to Colleen Strong. Colleen will be working with his executor, Ken Clavette to ensure the monies are distributed immediately to the family. Pledge receipts will be issued upon request.

The workplace harassment and violence provisions under the Canada Labour Code came into effect on January 1, 2021. Since then, many complaints have been filed that have helped clarify the Code. Jennifer Duff, legal partner at Shields, Hunt, Duff, Strachan will provide an overview of the legislation and what we need to be aware of since its inception.
Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw once said, “The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that is has taken place.” Sharing information about the union can be challenging without us unconsciously putting barriers in the way. Delegates will learn some simple tips and tricks that will help get the information out in the way that it is intended.
This video explains how to file your T4s and T4As on behalf of your members.
UCTE distributes a monthly membership report to local executive members to arm them with the information they need to make their Locals strong.
